On Saturday, August 5th, some of our beGirl.world alumni and 2 girls from our new class had the honor of attending BET's Black Girls Rock Celebration hosted by Taraji P. Henson! The signature black girl magic event honored inspirational heavyweights like Yara Shahidi, Issa Rae, Solange, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Roberta Flack, Suzanne Shank, and community advocates Derrica Wilson and Natalie Wilson of The Black & Missing Foundation.
We arrived at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center around 6:30pm, hurried through security, took a zillion photos (highlights below) before taking our seats for the show, which opened with a performance from SZA. Many of us had never attended a live taping of a televised show of that magnitude so experiencing the starting, stopping and repeat performances gave us a first account of how a broadcast was put together.
We won't say too much more because the show airs on August 22nd on BET, but we walked away feeling so inspired to be in a room surrounded by so many women to look up to that all had their set of personal struggles as they climbed the ladder in their professional or personal lives. Perhaps the most profound of the night for us was actress Yara Shahidi who is from the hit TV show Black-ish and soon to have her own show, Grown-ish. She'll be entering Harvard this Fall! She said, "We as black women focus so much on what we are not. Let's focus on what we are." We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
Enjoy the photos (we weren't allowed to take any inside of the venue during the show) and thank you to BET, DJ Beverly Bond and all the women who encourage us to remain steadfast in our quest for greatness, confidence and success. Check out this great recap & we can't wait to see the show on TV!
